What to Do in Cape Town: The Ultimate Travel Guide & Itinerary Ideas

Are you planning a trip to South Africa and wondering what to do in Cape Town or what to see in Cape Town?

I’ve been to South Africa several times thanks to my husband, who is South African, so this guide is a mix of a traveller’s perspective and local insight. Over the years, we’ve explored Cape Town from both angles — discovering the iconic highlights as visitors but also experiencing the city the way locals do.

Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered.

Cape Town is beautiful — dramatic mountains, ocean views, wildlife, and vibrant markets all in one place. Let’s dive in.

Table Mountain – A Must-See Landmark in Cape Town

You can’t visit Cape Town and skip Table Mountain. It’s the city’s most famous landmark and one of the top attractions in South Africa.

Yes, it can feel touristy. But here’s the trick: Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Arriving among the first visitors allows you to enjoy panoramic views with fewer crowds. But coming in the afternoon gives you the softer light. Once at the top, you’ll find multiple walking paths and viewpoints offering completely different perspectives over the city, coastline, and ocean.

There is a free hiking alternative (keep reading 👇), but Table Mountain offers a unique experience and 360° views you won’t get anywhere else.

Lion’s Head – The Best Free View in Cape Town

If you’re looking for free things to do in Cape Town, hiking Lion’s Head should be at the top of your list.

The hike takes about 40 minutes one way. Make sure to wear proper shoes and bring water. Some sections involve ladders and chains (a bit like a mini via ferrata), so you shouldn’t be afraid of heights. There is an alternative route around the steepest part, but it still includes a couple of ladders.

And here’s an insider tip:

If you’re planning a proposal… this might be the spot.

The sunset view from the top, overlooking Cape Town on one side and Camps Bay on the other, is simply unforgettable.

Hop On Hop Off Boat & Seals at the Waterfront

Most visitors know about the Hop On Hop Off bus in Cape Town, but fewer people discover the boats.

There’s a canal cruise near the Four Seasons and luxury apartments, and another route that takes you through the docks. It’s a relaxed ride with fewer tourists — and the highlight?

Seals.

You’ll pass their favourite chilling spots, and watching them rest and swim around the harbour is unexpectedly adorable.

Markets in Cape Town – A Food & Craft Lover’s Dream

Cape Town has some of the best markets we’ve ever experienced.

If you’re wondering where to eat in Cape Town or looking for local crafts, don’t miss:

  • V&A Food Market – incredible variety of international and local dishes

  • The Watershed – a transformed warehouse filled with local designers, art, jewelry, wine, and handmade pieces

Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or simply want to taste your way through the city, the markets are a must.

Two Oceans Aquarium

You might think the Two Oceans Aquarium is just for children — but it’s absolutely worth visiting as an adult too.

The underwater tunnel is the highlight. For a moment, you truly feel like you’re walking through the ocean.

It’s a beautiful reminder of Cape Town’s deep connection to the sea.

More Things to Do in Cape Town

Still wondering what else to add to your Cape Town itinerary?

Here are more unforgettable experiences:

Cape Town is the kind of city where you can hike a mountain in the morning and sip wine by the ocean in the evening.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Cape Town

Cape Town is not just a destination—it’s an experience.

From hiking Table Mountain and Lion’s Head to exploring markets, spotting seals, or going on safari, there are endless things to do in Cape Town.

Whether you’re building a 3-day itinerary or staying longer, this city offers adventure, beauty, and culture all in one place.

And once you visit, you’ll understand why so many travellers fall in love with it.
