During one of our road trips along South Africa’s famous Garden Route, we spent several days in Knysna — and it quickly became one of our favourite stops.
Knysna is the kind of place that feels peaceful the moment you arrive. Surrounded by lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and a calm lagoon on one side with the wild Indian Ocean on the other, it’s easy to understand why so many people choose it as a holiday retreat. And if you’re lucky (or wealthy) enough, this is the kind of place where you retire — waking up to views of the bay on one side and the powerful ocean crashing against the cliffs on the other.
It’s beautiful. Calm. Effortlessly charming.
Things to Do in Knysna
Despite its laid-back atmosphere, there are plenty of things to do in Knysna.
One of the most popular experiences is visiting the famous Knysna Heads — two dramatic sandstone cliffs guarding the entrance to the lagoon. You can take a ferry across the water, explore the other side, and even hop on a small train that takes you up the hill to a scenic viewing deck. The views from the top are absolutely worth it.
If you prefer something more private, you can hire a small boat or even a catamaran and explore the lagoon at your own pace — perfect for a relaxed afternoon or even a small celebration on the water.
The town itself offers lovely restaurants, cozy cafés, little shops selling local products, and charming markets in the center. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, walk more, and simply enjoy being present.

Visiting the Elephant Park in Knysna
One experience you should not miss is visiting the Knysna Elephant Park.
There’s plenty to do here — whether you choose to walk alongside the elephants, feed them, or learn more about their lives and conservation efforts. The park even offers the possibility of staying overnight, where you might spot zebras roaming nearby.
Our day at the elephant park was truly special. Our guide patiently answered all our questions and shared fascinating insights about the elephants, their personalities, and the work the park does to protect them.
It wasn’t a tourist attraction — it felt educational, respectful, and meaningful.

Knysna is one of those destinations that surprises you. It may not be as famous as Cape Town, but its combination of nature, ocean views, wildlife experiences, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect stop along the Garden Route.
And honestly? We would go back in a heartbeat.
