Experiencing a real African safari had always been a dream of mine — very high on my bucket list and constantly on my mind.
When we first visited Cape Town, South Africa, a few years ago, I was completely blown away. It was my first true experience on the African continent (if I don’t count one week in Cabo Verde), and I instantly knew I wanted more.
So when we booked our tickets for our next trip to Cape Town, I had one clear mission: find a safari near Cape Town that we could actually afford.
I quickly realised that many safari lodges in South Africa are luxury experiences — and priced accordingly. Multi-day safaris with accommodation can easily stretch the budget. But after some research, I discovered something that changed everything.
There are safari reserves just a couple of hours from Cape Town, and some of them offer one-day safari experiences — no overnight stay required.
That’s when I found Aquila Private Game Reserve.

What to Expect on a One Day Safari at Aquila
Our day started with a hotel pick-up in Cape Town. We hopped into a minivan together with other travelers from the US, France, England, and India — a wonderfully international group that made the journey even more fun.
We headed towards the Karoo, a semi-desert region outside the city. The scenery gradually changed from urban landscapes to wide open plains, rugged mountains, and dry terrain that already felt like a different world. After about two hours, we arrived at Aquila Private Game Reserve.
We were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine and directed to the breakfast buffet, which is included in the one-day safari package. After breakfast, we joined our group and climbed into a large open safari vehicle — ready for our Aquila game drive experience.
The game drive lasts approximately 2.5 hours, taking you across the reserve in search of wildlife.
The Wildlife: Seeing the Big Five Near Cape Town
And then it began.
We spotted elephants first — my absolute favorites. Seeing these gentle giants roaming freely in their natural habitat was incredibly special. No fences. No zoo enclosures. Just open land and silence.
During the drive, we were lucky enough to see:
Bathing hippos
Gracefully walking zebras
Relaxed rhinos
Elegant giraffes
And even yawning lions
For a safari just two hours from Cape Town, the experience felt surprisingly authentic.
We made a short stop at a small hut inside the reserve to stretch our legs, use the restrooms, grab some water, and simply take in the wilderness surrounding us. Standing there, in the middle of the South African landscape, felt surreal.
Lunch With a View of the Game Reserve
When we returned to the main lodge area, lunch was already prepared — and it was impressive.
The buffet offered a wide variety of dishes. South African cuisine is known for being quite meat-focused, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many salad and vegetarian options were available as well.
We ate overlooking the swimming pool and the reserve beyond it. And just when we thought the day couldn’t get better — we spotted elephants again in the distance.
It was one of those peaceful, grateful moments. Sitting there, in Africa, watching wildlife in the background — I truly couldn’t have asked for more.
Of course, we couldn’t leave without taking a dip in the hotel pool. In our excitement to cool off, we jumped in a little too quickly — and immediately realised the water was very cold. Refreshing, some would say. Slightly shocking, I would say.
We relaxed, enjoyed the view over the reserve, and simply appreciated the moment. Sitting there together, surrounded by African landscapes, watching wildlife in the distance — it truly felt like a perfect little bubble outside of time.
Eventually, though, every magical day has to end.
After roughly six hours at Aquila Private Game Reserve, it was time to head back. We climbed into the minivan and began the two-hour drive back to Cape Town, carrying with us full camera rolls, dusty shoes, and memories we will never forget.
Is a One Day Safari Near Cape Town Worth It?
If you’re wondering whether a one day safari from Cape Town is worth it — my honest answer is yes.
Is it the same as spending several days deep inside Kruger National Park? No. But if you’re short on time, budget-conscious, or simply want to experience African wildlife without flying across the country, Aquila Private Game Reserve offers an accessible and meaningful safari experience.
For us, it turned a long-time dream into reality — without needing to commit to a luxury multi-day lodge stay.
And sometimes, that’s exactly enough.
