If you're dreaming of a peaceful yet adventure-filled family getaway in the Austrian Alps, let us take you to a place that felt like pure magic — Ramsau am Dachstein. Nestled in the heart of Styria (Steiermark), this charming alpine village stole our hearts with its stunning landscapes, kid-friendly activities, and the slow, wholesome pace of mountain life.
We based ourselves at the beautiful Rittis Alpin Chalet, which we already raved about in our previous post — cozy, welcoming, and just steps away from some of the best nature Austria has to offer.
But Ramsau is so much more than a pretty place to sleep. Here's what made our family trip here unforgettable.

The Dachstein Glacier: Snow in Summer
One of the most surreal moments of our trip was stepping onto the Dachstein Glacier, even in the middle of summer. The panoramic cable car ride up is an adventure in itself, offering jaw-dropping views of the surrounding peaks.
Up top? Snow! Ice! A suspension bridge! The Sky Walk and Ice Palace might not be for the faint of heart, but for our little one, it was like walking into a snowy fairytale. Make sure to dress warm — even if you're in sandals at the bottom, it’s winter at the top.
Rittisberg Playground & Forest Slide Park
Just a few minutes from our accommodation, Rittisberg was a true highlight for our toddler. There’s a giant adventure playground, forest slides, a fairytale trail, and even a summer toboggan run.
It’s one of those places where kids can just be kids — barefoot in the grass, climbing, running, and exploring. And as parents, we got to slow down, sip coffee with mountain views, and just watch the joy unfold.
Lunch with a View at Ramsau Beach Pizzeria
We weren’t expecting much when we stopped by Ramsau Beach Pizzeria, but oh wow — it turned out to be one of our favourite meals of the trip. A casual spot right by the lake, with incredible views, a calm atmosphere, and surprisingly delicious food (yes, even with a toddler tugging on our sleeves!).
There’s a small lake where kids can splash around, sand play areas, and lots of green space. It felt like the perfect place to unwind after a morning of exploring.
Why Ramsau Feels Special
Ramsau am Dachstein isn’t a tourist trap. It’s not crowded or flashy. It’s clean, calm, and deeply connected to nature. You’re more likely to see cows and horses than crowds of people, and the rhythm of life here invites you to slow down — which is exactly what we needed.
Whether you're hiking, sipping coffee on your balcony, or just watching your little one run across an open meadow, there’s a deep peace to this place.
