They say we should be careful what we wish for because it just might come true. For years, I dreamed of visiting Bali. The universe listened—it just sent me to the northern coast of Crete instead of Indonesia! And you know what? It was the best "misunderstanding" that could have ever happened to us.

If you’re looking for a holiday destination that perfectly combines turquoise waters, authentic Greek hospitality, and a laid-back resort vibe, welcome to Bali, Crete.

Bali in Crete: The Unexpected Hidden Gem of Greece You Need to Visit

Where Did the Name "Bali" in Greece Come From?

You might be wondering how this Mediterranean paradise got such an exotic name. There are two local legends. The first says it comes from the Turkish word balli (meaning "honey"), because beehives have always thrived in this region. The second version bets on the word ballik (meaning "fish"). Whether you prefer honey or fresh fish, you will definitely get plenty of both here!

Today, Bali is a modern yet incredibly picturesque resort that has managed to keep its traditional fishing village charm. You’ll find everything here, from cosy traditional tavernas to professional diving schools.

My Travel Tip: We managed to grab [cheap flights to Crete via Kayak], which is our go-to flight search engine for tracking the best prices. Plus, you can easily catch a public bus straight from Heraklion Airport, so renting a car isn’t a must if you just want to relax.

4 Must-Visit Beaches in Bali, Crete

The resort of Bali is made of four beautiful bays, each offering a completely different energy. We decided to base ourselves near the longest one—Livadi Beach.

1. Livadi Beach: For the Adventure Seekers

This is where we anchored our holiday and tried parasailing on our very first day. If you’re afraid of heights, trust me, the breathtaking panoramic views of the Cretan coastline are worth pushing through that initial fear!

  • What to try: Parasailing or a guided kayak safari.

  • Where to eat: Hotel Nostos right on the beach. They serve amazing cocktails, have a beautiful Bali-style outdoor seating area, and offer an excellent lunch menu.

2. Varkotopos Beach: A Snorkeling Paradise

To be honest, this beach didn't completely wow us at first glance. But all it took was walking just a little further along the coast to discover a hidden underwater paradise. The rocky cliffs surrounding the bay are absolutely ideal for snorkelling. Or find yourself a tour.

3. Limani Beach: Authentic Greek Romance

Limani is the harbour part of Bali, and it oozes the most authentic Greek atmosphere you can possibly imagine.

  • Where to grab a drink: Harbour Cafe, perched on the cliff right above the beach. Snag a seat on the balcony, order a chilled iced frappé, and just watch the boats glide in and out of the harbour.

  • Dinner tip: Restaurace Panorama on the opposite side of the harbour. Having dinner surrounded by the shade of grapevines and vibrant pink flowers is pure Mediterranean romance.

4. Karavostasis Beach: Wild Beauty Between the Cliffs

This is the smallest and most remote beach in the area. Tucked tightly between dramatic cliffs, it feels beautifully raw and wild. If you want to escape the crowds, hike up the hill overlooking the bay to watch the waves crashing against the rocks on the other side.

Practical Crete Travel Tips (What Worked for Us)

  • Getting Around Bali: If you don't feel like walking up and down the hilly paths between the beaches, take the local mini-train. For €7 you get a return ticket that works like a charming little hop-on, hop-off tour.

  • Where to Book Accommodation: When searching for hotels, we always compare multiple platforms like Booking.com, Agoda, and Hotels.com to ensure we get the best rate and selection.

  • Safety First: Even though Crete is an incredibly safe destination, we never travel without high-quality travel insurance—especially when planning activities like parasailing or kayaking. We always use online comparison tools to secure our coverage in just a few minutes before we fly.
