This autumn we decided to try something new – a road trip by camper van to Austria.
Every year we like to explore something new or visit new places. Traveling by camper van or caravan was something we hadn’t done before, but we found Filip camper from the company BARTH and set off to the mountains.
Just us, the camper van, and the silence of the mountains. With no big plans – only the freedom to stop wherever it was the most beautiful. We were surprised at how easy it is to travel with a caravan in Austria, how much peace you can find outside the main season… and how much it helps you slow down.
What It Was Like on the Road
Mornings in the camper were pleasant and slow, and every time we opened the door, we had a different view.
We spent our days in mountain meadows, by lakes, and at playgrounds in small villages where time seemed to stand still, and locals didn’t pay much attention to tourists (us), who walked around with smiles glued to their faces.
Each day was different — sometimes we swam in a glacial lake; other times we hid from the rain with a book or a stuffed animal in hand. This trip wasn’t about seeing as much as possible but about reconnecting with ourselves, with nature, and with family.
What to Take on a Camper Van Trip
Mornings and evenings in the mountains tend to be chilly, even when the sun shines during the day. That’s why we reached for functional clothing and warm sweatshirts (we stocked up head to toe at Decathlon), which came in especially handy for morning coffee outside or evening barbecues.
We slept in sleeping bags, but you can just as easily bring regular duvets and pillows into the camper to make it cozier and more comfortable.
Chairs, a table, and even a grill can be rented from BARTH-caravan, and additional gear — from backpacks and travel bags to headlamps and thermal mugs — we also got from Decathlon. We appreciate that we can always find quality items there that last, don’t break the budget, and outfit mom, dad, and the little one all at once.
What We Took Away from Our Camper Van Trip to Austria
That less planning means more experience. I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t have a plan for the whole week, but as the days unfolded and the weather changed, I realised it’s better to let the landscape guide you.
A camper van isn’t just a means of transport but a little home that follows you. And when you drive slowly, you notice things you would otherwise overlook. Plus, you become part of the “camper family”, where people greet each other on the road, talk about their vans, and share the same topic — adventure.
If You Dream or Think About a Similar Trip
Before we set off, I had dozens of questions — where to sleep, how to plan the route, how long to drive, and what to pack. Now I know that everything can be handled easily if you have a good plan.
👉 That’s why I created an itinerary of our camper van trip through Austria.
In it, you’ll find the exact places we visited and parked, along with recommendations for nearby spots with the best views, markets, and tips for quiet places away from the crowds. It also includes a map, family-friendly suggestions, and advice on how to truly enjoy campervan travel without stress.
Traveling by camper van gives you something a classic vacation never will – freedom and peace.
And if you’d like to follow a tried-and-true route, my itinerary will save you hours of planning and add days of true relaxation.
