When we decided to explore the west coast of Norway, Ålesund was high on our list — and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful and memorable places we’ve ever visited.

Ålesund isn’t just stunning — it’s unique. With colorful Art Nouveau buildings, ocean views, and surrounding fjords and islands, this town feels like something out of a dream. But what made it special wasn’t just the views — it was how relaxed and child-friendly everything felt. No rushing, no stress, just slow, simple days we’ll remember for years.

Arrival tip from us:

When we landed, we were pleasantly surprised by how small and easy the airport is — the bus stop is literally right in front of the arrivals hall, so there’s no way you’ll miss it (you could almost hop on it straight from the luggage belt 😄). Tickets costed us 100 NOK per person (one way), and as with nearly everything in Norway, you can just tap your card — no cash needed.

We got off by the small info kiosk, where you can grab a map, book a local trip or just ask whatever's on your mind. Super handy and super friendly.

Here are a few of our favorite moments and tips if you’re planning your own visit.

What to do and see in Alesund, Norway

1. Ålesund Aquarium (Atlanterhavsparken)

This was a highlight — not only for our toddler, but for us as well. The whole place is beautifully done: there are large tanks with local sea life, touch pools where kids can get hands-on, and even an outdoor area with seals and penguins. It’s the perfect mix of educational and fun.

Tip: Don’t rush. There are quiet corners to sit and just watch. We loved the outdoor picnic area with ocean views — it felt like a peaceful break in the middle of an active day.

2. Fjellstua Viewpoint — 418 Steps Worth Taking

Yes, we did it. With a toddler! The walk up to Aksla mountain starts right in town, and while 418 steps sound like a lot, it’s actually doable if you take your time. The reward? A panoramic view of Ålesund, the sea, and surrounding mountains that truly takes your breath away.

Tip: Bring snacks, go slow, and enjoy the journey. There are benches along the way and kids will love the sense of “climbing a mountain.”

3. Visit Atlantic Sea-Park (Atlanterhavsparken)

One of Scandinavia's largest saltwater aquariums, located just west of the city, Atlantic Sea-Park is home to penguins, seals, otters, and dramatic underwater tunnels. It’s ideal for rainy days or families curious about marine life.

Family-friendly bonus: Interactive feeding shows, indoor exhibits, and plenty of space. Kids can explore without feeling confined—nature meets soft adventure.

4. Explore Tueneset Nature Playground & Coastal Trails

This ocean-side wilderness playground blends sandstone rocks, wild berries, short walking trails, and viewpoints. The open-air Tueneset Naturlekeplass feels more like a nature museum than a playground.

Why families love it: Kids can run freely, climb on rocks, and discover the coast, while parents enjoy quiet beauty and sea views without structured tours.

Alnes Lighthouse: Drive or ferry to the nearby Alnes Island for beach time, watching seabirds, and enjoying simple local cafes with sea views—perfect for a relaxed escape

Atlantic Ocean Road: If you rent a car, take the 2–3‑hour coastal drive to this iconic scenic route. It spans eight bridges across rocky islets with dramatic sea views — often crowned “World’s Best Road Trip.”

Why Ålesund Is So Unique

It strikes the perfect balance between small-town calm and coastal charm. You're more likely to pass grazing cows than crowds. You can wander, kayak, hike, drop in at cafés—you don’t need a strict itinerary.

Final Note

Ålesund gives you nature without needing to head inland, culture without feeling crowded, and family travel without constant planning. Whether you're sipping coffee at Fjellstua, spotting otters at the aquarium, or simply wandering cobbled alleys beneath Art Nouveau spires—it’s a place that invites presence.

Hi, I'm Claire – and this is my little corner of the internet where women can pause, breathe, and feel a little less alone. The Palms Family started as a family journal – a space to share our travels with a young child, the honest parts of motherhood, and the calm that comes with choosing a slower, more intentional life.

Here, I share child-friendly travel tips, minimalist inspiration, and the quiet joys of everyday moments. I don’t teach perfection – just a path that feels good, even when it’s messy.

I truly believe that even with a toddler (and sometimes because of one), it’s possible to explore, create, and live differently. Slowly. Gently. In your own way.
